La, Bang, swoosh, ting!
Welcome to Break Out Voices
Break Out Voices is a choir with a difference. Based in Windmill Hill, Bristol, UK we are a group of amateur singers that combines A Cappella vocals with percussion, movement, simple beat-boxing and noise-making. More of a 'vocal band' than a choir we will be singing a repertoire of popular music arranged by band leader Kate Fletcher.
I Love Singing! Can I Join?
Break Out Voices is founded on the ethos that everyone should have the opportunity to sing and have fun with music regardless of ability or experience. We are a friendly, welcoming group and are open to all over 18s.
Though an ability to hold a tune is an advantage, you certainly don’t need to be able to sing brilliantly. There is no audition and you won't be put on the spot (unless you would really welcome a chance to shine as a soloist!)
You do not even need to be able to read music - songs will be learned by ear but with sheet music and lyric sheets emailed round for those who would like it. We will record all the parts for people to practice at home and bringing your own smartphone or recording device to use in rehearsal is encouraged.
With an emphasis on percussion and noise-making - using everything from body percussion to DIY instruments to simple beat-box sounds - Break Out Voices combines theatrical elements with singing to create exciting performances for both singers and audiences.
If you’d like to join, get in touch via the contact page and we’ll invite you along for a free taster session.
All that we ask is that you come with an open mind and a healthy dose of enthusiasm. Again, if you’d like to give it a try, get in touch via the contact page for your free taster session.
I Love Being on Stage! Do we get the Chance to Perform?
We will be working towards performances every few months so members would need to have a certain level of commitment towards these events. Break Out Voices aims to look as well as sound exciting and unique and we’ll need people to bring their personality to the performance – this is your chance to really go for it!
I’m a bit Nervous. Do we really have to Perform?
Kate's belief is that performing – and the confidence boost that comes with it - should be for everyone. Being part of a group gives you safety in numbers and you won’t be picked out for any solo roles unless you want to be. The more you do it, the better you get at it and you’ll soon find that standing in front of big groups is no longer a worry for you – a great skill for everyday life as well as in the choir. Together we’ll work on ways to break down those nerves and feel happy and confident on stage.
I’m Creative. Is there an Outlet for me?
Yes! Unlike many other amateur choirs, as a member of Break Out Voices you will be encouraged to offer up your own ideas for rhythms, sounds, harmonies or which songs you’d like to arrange. Sections of the rehearsal will occasionally be dedicated to a creative task. It’s a democracy not a dictatorship so have fun with it.
Is there a Social Aspect?
Of course. Break Out Voices is a chance to get to know other like-minded people from South Bristol and beyond. Heading to the pub after practice is encouraged. And there’s nothing like putting on a performance as a true ‘team building’ exercise.
